A Conversation, a Provocation, a Transmission

What follows began as a conversation between a publisher and an author, which is almost too neat given the story that triggered it.

At the end of July, the Guardian reported on the collapse of a major publishing deal after uncertainty over whether a novel’s creative process could be authenticated. Whatever the truth of that individual case, the wider question landed hard: when people demand proof of human work, how much proof will ever be enough?

V. Tracer responded with a provocative note on Substack. It was funny, furious, and entirely reasonable in the way that the best provocations are. If every book, image, message and thought must be accompanied by a verifiable chain of evidence, then perhaps we should return to fountain pens, wax seals and carrier pigeons. Perhaps correspondence itself should arrive with a witness attached.

The Witnesses is not an answer to the AI-authorship argument. It is a nightmare drawn from the logic beneath it. It asks what happens when provenance becomes a public duty, when domestic cameras become evidence of honesty, and when the instinct to prove yourself develops a life of its own.

The joke, as it so often does, becomes infrastructure.

A small piece of publishing news

This is also a real-world publishing moment. Art of FACELESS is now the official publisher of Maroon.

Our publishing model is built around a simpler position: contributors keep their copyright, their rights and their control. We license work for agreed terms; we do not claim ownership of the person who made it.

So this post is a record of something small but real: a news story about creative suspicion, a publisher-author conversation, a Substack provocation, and an author writing a disturbing piece of fiction before the day had properly begun.

A Collective Process, in Public

This is also a small piece of evidence for what Art of FACELESS is becoming.

A news story lands. A publisher and an author talk about it. One member of the collective writes a provocative note. Another takes the provocation, drinks coffee at six in the morning, and turns the unease beneath it into fiction. The collective publishes it, connects it to a living body of work, and lets the conversation continue.

No committee flattening the idea. No need to pretend that creativity arrives from nowhere. No anxiety that collaboration somehow makes the work less human.

This is collaboration, discussion, creation and publishing as one seamless process. It is people making things together, openly acknowledging influence, argument, humour and momentum, while still respecting who made what and who owns it.

Art of FACELESS is now publishing Maroon, V. Tracer’s cyberpunk and digital-horror universe, alongside its own expanding worlds, including The Hollow Circuit. That does not mean sanding every project into one corporate surface. It means building a collective infrastructure where distinct voices can remain distinct, support one another, and reach audiences without surrendering their rights or becoming content fuel for someone else’s machine.

And honestly: who would not want to be part of that?

Otherwise, we already know where this ends. A camera in every room. A live record of every screen. Every private draft, joke, hesitation and collaboration submitted for inspection until proof of humanity becomes the thing that quietly takes it away.
