In a forgotten lecture hall below the city, Seya listened as Professor Marr spoke of the Sylen—creatures who speak in light and read thoughts through touch.
Their holographic image rippled across the tunnel: opaline, tendrilled, beautiful, and wrong.
Each pulse of colour felt too near, each word too intimate.
Marr called it empathy. Seya tasted it as invasion.
When the lights returned, the walls still shimmered, echoing the Sylen’s breath.
Outside, the biolights of the city began to flicker in time with her heartbeat—half a beat ahead, as if something unseen were teaching her rhythm.
Perhaps the city was learning. Maybe it had been learning all along.
