On Not Leading With Letters: A Reminder About Assumptions

Jane Goodall was dismissed for anthropomorphising chimps. Barbara McClintock was marginalised for her "feeling for the organism." Outsider scientists often see what institutional frameworks are designed to miss, not despite their outsider status, but because of it.

We haven't worn a tie in decades. Our skin carries more ink than our CVs carry institutional credentials. We lead with "multimedia creatives from Cardiff" because that's what we are, punk artists who've spent fourteen years building hyperstitional universes, documenting facelessness as resistance architecture, and rejecting the surveillance capitalism that academia too often serves.

But here's the thing about breadcrumbs: you have to follow them to know where they lead.

Someone recently dismissed our AI consciousness research without examining the methodology. Fair enough, we're not academics, right? Except we are. Or were. Or chose not to be, which is different from lacking the option. Lloyd's got a PhD in pharmacology, decades in pharmaceutical research before walking away from that particular machinery. Seren's background is in psychology. We know how institutional validation works. We just refuse to let it define the work.

This isn't about credentials as trump cards. It's about something more fundamental: the danger of judging books by their covers, and the strategic choice of which cover to show.
