Art of FACELESS Is Now a Registered Publisher — Here's What That Means

A short one for the record books. This isn't a rights-grab, a pivot, or a rebrand — it's paperwork catching up to what we've been building.

What just happened

Art of FACELESS is now registered with the Nielsen ISBN Agency, the UK's sole authorised ISBN body, and holds its own block of UK ISBNs under the "Art of FACELESS" imprint. In plain terms: AOF can now stand as the actual publisher of record on physical books, not a placeholder, not "Independently published," not someone else's account. Art of FACELESS.

Why this matters (and why it isn't a compromise)

We've said from the start that AOF exists as a decentralised collective — infrastructure and support for creators, not a machine built to extract from them. Some people, reasonably, ask whether hooking into an industry-standard system like ISBN registration quietly undoes that.

It doesn't. An ISBN is a protocol, not a power structure — a shared numbering system libraries and bookshops use to find a book, nothing more. What actually centralises or conforms is who owns the work, who decides what gets published, and where the money goes — and none of that has changed. Contributors keep their copyright, keep their rights, and keep control. Registering with Nielsen just means AOF can now do the practical, boring, necessary part of being a real publisher properly, on our own terms, under our own name.

What doesn't change

• Facelessness is Freedom. Nothing About Us Without Us. Still the whole point.
• Contributors still own everything they make. AOF never takes ownership — just a license, and only for as long as the agreement runs.
• The ISBN allocation costs nothing extra for contributors — it's covered as a normal part of AOF's running costs, same as hosting or admin.
• Ebooks still don't need one at all. This is purely about physical books heading to bookshops, libraries, and wider retail.
